ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 explores the concept of creating balance in qualitative inquiry as a means of personal and professional transformation. It emphasizes the importance of critical self-reflection, reflexivity and deep listening as tools for developing meaningful change in research practices. The chapter delves into the negotiation and mediation of power dynamics in research, with a focus on promoting justice-centered approaches. It also discusses the process of unlearning and relearning ingrained ideas and biases, particularly in the context of decolonizing research. The chapter highlights diverse perspectives and stories from researchers around the world, including Giovanna Fassetta, Nupur Samuel and Sally St. George and Dan Wulff. These stories offer insights into transformative learning experiences in teaching and learning, practitioner approaches and researcher practices from Ghana, India and Canada. They shed light on the complexities of ethics, power, privilege, language and trust, encouraging critical self-reflection and a shift toward justice-centered research. Ultimately, the chapter invites readers to embrace new ways of thinking and researching that prioritize balance and social, economic and environmental justice.
