ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 explores self-transformation in qualitative inquiry, delving into the theory and practice of transformative learning. It highlights the importance of critical self-reflection, vulnerability and awareness in the research process, both inside and outside formal education. Transformative research, aimed at addressing power imbalances and promoting justice, is discussed alongside culturally responsive approaches that amplify marginalized voices and uphold human rights. Through captivating stories from Meagan Call-Cummings and LeAnne Beardsley, Andrea Lypka and Christy Williams, and Gary Padgett, the chapter illustrates transformative learning and growth experienced by researchers. These narratives showcase the integration of culturally relevant practices and transformative research to confront societal injustices. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the value of critical self-reflection, building trusting relationships and enacting positive change in research and practice.
