ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 emphasizes the messy nature of research, the importance of critical self-reflection and the recognition of diverse perspectives. It advocates for openness, humbleness and a justice-centered approach that amplifies marginalized voices. By learning from these stories, researchers can navigate challenges and enhance their own research practices while promoting social justice. In this chapter, three life-changing stories are shared from researchers Maria Grazia Imperiale, Chiemeka Onyeze-Joe and Dustin De Felice. These stories illustrate the process of acknowledging research failures, facing risks and experiencing transformative learning. The researchers critically self-reflect and discuss realizations in their research processes, addressing topics such as access, power, privilege and sociopolitics. Through their struggles and insights, they offer guidance for ethical and meaningful paths in qualitative inquiry.
