ABSTRACT

Architects and other non-M/E specialists in the project team need a basic understanding of building services so they can successfully design and coordinate services that deliver a comfortable living environment. Early on in the design process, the designers need to know basic characteristics of each option, including the size, location, performance, practical requirements and aesthetics. This chapter outlines the requirements and recommendations for the most common domestic services. It covers traditional hot water systems as well as more innovative technologies like waste water heat recovery and solar thermal panels. There are a number of suitable ventilation systems outlined in this chapter ranging from low-tech passive stack to highly efficient heat recovery systems. As the space heating demands reduce through improved fabric performance, the predominant thermal demand is from the domestic hot water system.
