ABSTRACT

The final chapter of this book concludes with reconsideration of the global gaze. Through reiteration of the main features of the internationalisation of education, ways in which the global gaze reproduces inequalities through the creation of global subjectivities are identified. The chapter questions whether the global gaze can be resisted, reconfigured or replaced with a more empowering and equitable gaze, through revisiting the meaning of cosmopolitanism. The chapter suggests that current academic practices direct attention towards internalisation of inequitable internationalisation and away from awareness of the global picture. It calls on international academics to be more intentional in their internationalised behaviours, and for internationalised institutions to reflect on how issues of social justice are addressed in their practices.
