ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how those in leadership positions often feel ill-equipped to handle sensitive discussions with colleagues about their mental health. It offers some pointers to news managers and those in positions of responsibility on how to start a conversation with colleagues about their wellbeing, how to model empathy, and how to communicate effectively. It includes interviews with experts, such as those in leadership positions, as well as mental health and HR experts, and makes the point that, for managers to manage well and be effective role models, they must practise self-care and put on their own oxygen masks before going on to help others.
