ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the various strands of previous chapters, offering a suggested path forward that considers mental health and wellbeing as an integral part of a sustainable journalism. It explains how journalism safety must be looked at holistically and how physical, online and emotional safety need to be considered as parts of a whole. The chapter concludes by showing how the industry can take steps to ensure that its most precious resources – its journalists – are supported to ensure they stay well, so journalism is done well too. The chapter incorporates insights and quotes from experts and suggestions for an effective future strategy to incorporate wellbeing across the industry, underpinned by increased solidarity among news organisations.
