ABSTRACT

This chapter considers post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its prevalence in journalism. It charts conversations about this mental health condition in the media, explaining both what it is and how it manifests itself. It details how discussions around post-traumatic stress have changed over the years, from when it was only really considered in the context of veteran war correspondents, to something which can impact journalists covering other traumatic incidents. At the heart of the chapter are stories of journalists who have experienced PTSD, and who share their journeys, and observations on what the industry might do better.
