ABSTRACT

Throughout these chapters I chart abortion rights trajectories and highlight the main issues that are central to abortion discourse in the respective countries. In doing so, I also look at how these discourses are crafted by grounding them temporally in their socio-historical environment. The basis for the countries chosen was my interest in looking at particular themes that were prominent in discourses around the world. I wanted to see how different philosophies and schools of thought influenced discourse and legality in specific countries. I have, as far as possible, chosen countries from regions across the world, their compatibility lying in the kinds of actors and influences that were particular to each country. Some countries are geographically proximate, others are not. The ones that are geographically proximate interpret legality and allowance in different ways, while some that aren’t show similarities in relationships between institutions and the publics.
