ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses three examples to elaborate on Russia's security policy: the war in Ukraine, the Russian anti-satellite program, and Russia's contemporary Afghan policy. Through these cases, it explains how and why Russia uses different security strategies and methods. Moreover, in the case of Afghanistan, the conduct of Russia's foreign policy is analyzed.

It states that these three cases of Russia's contemporary external security policy reflect several facets. The asymmetric approaches in Russia's invasion of Ukraine and its anti-satellite program are stressed. In the case of Russia's contemporary policy on Afghanistan, it concludes that Moscow relies on diplomacy, but that it is supported to some extent by its security policy in the region. However, although Moscow uses several approaches regarding Afghanistan, it is not possible to claim that any are asymmetric or that new tactics have been unveiled in the Russian Afghan policy.
