ABSTRACT

When discussing the teaching-learning process, the term assignment is always mentioned. Assignments are an essential part of the education system, and they involve activities such as reading, answering questions, reviewing articles, and watching videos. It is important to remember that assignments as a follow-up teaching activity are designed and distributed to learners for various purposes, including reinforcing the material learned in class, encouraging students to think critically and creatively, and providing a platform to showcase their knowledge and skills. Typically, learners work on given assignments independently, but teachers should consider making them a cooperative learning activity. Assignments have the potential to promote collaborative learning (CL), and this chapter aims to help teachers understand how to use them effectively. The chapter covers the purpose of assignments, popular assignments, and common ways of giving assignments. It also explores emerging approaches to assigning work and strategies for using assignments to promote CL.
