ABSTRACT

In the 21st century, calls for making educational institutions a place for promoting active learning are getting louder. The argument is that active learning places a greater responsibility on the learner and helps them deeply understand and apply the learned knowledge more effectively and efficiently. Active learning has become the antithesis of traditional education, which is critiqued for promoting passive learning. Active learning demands that learners actively engage in learning by thinking, discussing, investigating, and creating. Teachers’ most obvious question regarding active learning is how to promote it in their classrooms, where the passive learning approach prevails. As an exciting and innovative approach, teachers may use assessments for this purpose. This chapter focuses on the central theme of employing different assessments to promote active learning. The chapter starts by detailing active learning, its characteristics, and its relevance for new-age learners in the 21st century. Afterwards, the chapter discusses how assessments can help promote active learning and suggests several practical strategies for effectively and efficiently using assessments to bring active learning into the classroom.
