Setting the scene of this book

This chapter provides the Chinese context relating to some concepts relevant to this book. It includes the categorisation of urban and rural under the Chinese hukou system; the university hierarchy in China, and how this book defines Chinese elite universities; and the elite university admissions in China. The contextual information facilitates the understanding of the following chapters and the justification of my research focus on Chinese urban and rural students' access to Chinese elite universities.
