ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a thumbnail sketch of the changes that occurred in the thirty years between the Act of Secession in 1534 and Shakespeare’s birth in 1564. It provides context and cause for the brief flourishing of humanist education, which was at its height at the time Shakespeare and his generation were attending Latin grammar schools in the second half of the century.
