ABSTRACT

In Qur’anic chapter 18, a story of Moses meeting a mysterious figure is narrated. This figure is known in the Islamic tradition as al-Khidr. While Moses shortly accompanies this figure to learn from his divinely given wisdom, al-Khidr commits unexplainable acts, including the killing of an innocent child. While the story ends by al-Khidr explaining to Moses the reasons for what he did, no detailed argument regarding the paradoxical permissibility of killing that child was provided. This chapter introduces the story as shared by the most important classical and modern authentic exegetical resources. All cited references are primary resources written in Arabic. All translations are by the author.
