ABSTRACT

Traditionally, the case method evolved as a paper-based learning resource, and its popularity continues as such today. However, there are a growing number of non-paper-based case studies that are available in different media formats, many of which are proving very popular with students, who themselves often tend to engage better through technology-enhanced, multi-media approaches to learning. The first challenge here is to ensure that while the format has changed, the student’s role as an active participant at the centre of a multi-media case doesn’t become passive and disengaged. On the contrary, working with multi-media cases normally offers students the opportunity to take the driving seat as they craft their own journey through the complexities of the case data. This chapter explores the benefits and pitfalls of working with different multi-media case technologies and considers a range of strategies to maintain active student engagement.
