ABSTRACT

There is all-pervasive gender discrimination, deep-rooted in age-old patriarchal mindsets. Working women, especially in low-income families face an additional burden due to household responsibilities. Existing programmes have been ineffective and amount to tokenism. Pressure from women’s groups is vital for public policies for gender equity that require actions under five heads. First, massive imaginative communication and awareness campaigns. These must highlight successful role models. Second, ensuring equity and improved access to education. The curriculum must be gender-sensitive and education policies must encourage women to opt for STEM courses. Third, a supportive childcare system, including through crèches and equal parenting. Fourth, improving women’s mobility and safety in the workplace, and finally asset and cash transfers to women. The gender equity roadmap should include actions, including legislation, favouring the LGBTQIA+ community. Policy actions must be backed by adequate budgets and spread across all government ministries through meaningful gender budgets.
