ABSTRACT

Graphic organizers are a tool to support student reasoning. This chapter explores the role of graphic organizers for students with IEPs. Sections of the chapter describe the features of high-impact graphic organizers based on specific student needs, recommendations for implementing them in the secondary math classroom, and suggestions for removing scaffolds as students strengthen their math skills. It is helpful to teach students how to apply graphic organizers through intentional and spaced practice. The chapter includes multiple examples of graphic organizers that can be used in the secondary math classroom. These tools can help students make sense of content-area text or simplify concepts in secondary math.
