ABSTRACT

Classroom questions are a powerful tool for assessment and instruction. This chapter explores the specific uses of different styles of questioning and how they should be adapted to meet the needs of students with IEPs. Teachers can implement assessing questions to gauge students’ current level of knowledge or advancing questions as an instructional tool to push students’ thinking forward. Suggestions for each question type are provided as well as special considerations for adapting questions for specific students as needed. Advancing questions are further broken down into categories of funneling questions that direct student work and focusing questions that prompt student thinking. Examples are used to contrast these two styles of questioning.
