ABSTRACT

Students often use a single test grade to describe their learning, but it is impossible to summarize a student's learning with one score. Data analysis is the practice of digging deeper into student work to better understand exactly what students already know and what they are ready to learn next. With some preparation, teachers can involve students in this data analysis. When students analyze and understand their own performance, it increases their ownership of their learning and engages them in the growth process. This chapter describes the important facets of data analysis for secondary math classrooms and provides tools and strategies for streamlining data analysis.
