ABSTRACT

Secondary math classrooms serve a rich, diverse community of students. Each student has unique strengths, experiences, and needs. Teachers have a responsibility to meet the individual needs of the students in their care, which often requires a combination of math content knowledge and familiarity with child development. Teachers must continually develop their professional skillset to meet the needs of their student community. This introduction sets the stage for the remainder of the book by highlighting teachers’ professional responsibility to grow and improve their practice over time. Teachers’ actions in the classroom have a lasting impact on students. Effective teaching often requires professionals to search for solutions and reach out to their professional support network.
