ABSTRACT

Teaching secondary math to neurodiverse students requires collaboration between math teachers and special educators. Each of these professionals possesses specific skills to help students meet progress toward their IEP goals and achieve success in the math classroom. Math teachers contribute their content knowledge and their understanding of math pedagogy. Special educators are trained to understand how students’ cognitive abilities will impact classroom learning and to identify strategies to help students reach their IEP goals. Both skillsets are necessary to provide all students access to the rich, meaningful math curriculum they deserve. This chapter discusses the role of math educators and special educators, and it describes the overall organization of the book.
