ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the importance of clear learning objectives to guide instruction. Learning targets help teachers emphasize student learning and provide a tool for measuring student progress. The chapter describes a strategy for creating scaffolded learning targets and using them to plan classroom instruction. This approach supports students who receive special education services by setting clear goals and identifying prerequisite skills that may pose learning gaps. Through the process of crafting learning targets, teachers will identify both on-level math skills and below-level math skills students must master in order to be successful. This allows teachers to better recognize specific student needs and deliver targeted instruction when necessary.
