ABSTRACT

The chapter first recapitulates the book’s historical argument about the role of tropical and subtropical economies in nation-state building in Europe. The subsequent discussion takes the form of an epilogue inviting readers to consider the historical narrative from the perspective of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Important differences existed in the manner in which states formed transnationally. Nonetheless, the major states continued to conceive of national economic governance and development in terms of transnational control relations and as a projection into the globe. The significance of these historical legacies suggests the ongoing relevance of the book’s subject in today’s world.
