ABSTRACT

The second chapter applies approaches from literary theory to recent developments in autobiographical writings. Themes traditionally addressed by literary theorists studying autobiography are also explored in terms of their aesthetic and performative aspects. The result is a concept of the autobiographical field that allows us to work toward a new theoretical model to analyze contemporary Polish women’s autobiographical writing. Subsequently, these hypotheses are examined with reference to works by Ewa Kuryluk, a well-known Jewish writer and artist, and Zuzanna Janin, a visual artist and daughter of the famous Polish painter Maria Anto. The mother-daughter relationships are shown to form parallels across art and family.
