ABSTRACT

To introduce the topic of the psychoanalyst’s task, I have chosen to do so accompanied by Freud’s (1914) brief and dense work Remembering, Repeating and Working Through, from which I will make mention. The first element I want to highlight refers to the fact that the task takes place in the mutual presence (physical or virtual, depending on the situation) of both members of the dyad because this is the condition for emotions and thoughts to be presented and elaborated; this requirement is based on the fact that transformations are impossible before “an enemy who is absent or not within range”. The emerging contact and intimacy will have an impact on the emergence of a “more comprehensive” and “present-day” view of the analysand.
