ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how a robust counterinsurgency strategy by the Pakistani government crushed the fighting capability of the TTP by dismantling the organization’s infrastructure and manpower, which ultimately led to the demise of FATA insurgency. Mounting power of the TTP and its vicious terrorist campaign created essential political resolve and public support for taking tough actions against the insurgency. The US pressure under the Obama administration on the Pakistani government was also instrumental in pushing Islamabad to take the TTP threat seriously. All these factors combined directed the Pakistani government to revamp of the previous abortive counterinsurgency campaign. A vigorous counterinsurgency strategy constituted dedicated and well-trained counterinsurgency forces, a judicious use of force, a focus on destroying insurgency infrastructure and measures to lessen peoples’ grievances that helped to bring down the Taliban insurgency in the FATA.
