ABSTRACT

The practical aspects of labour market policy are the responsibility of a special Government department, the Labour Market Administration, which is headed by the National Labour Market Board. During the recession which became quite pronounced in the course of 1958 labour market policy was given increasing prominence in economic policy, and a big increase was made in the grant at the disposal of the Labour Market Board for counteracting the decline in employment. The movement of labour in a particular direction and the ironing-out of discrepancies between surplus and deficit areas of the labour market presuppose accurate and detailed information about the real conditions. The informative announcement of vacancies and improved labour exchange facilities cannot, however, solve all the problems of adjustment. The housing question has been and still is a tremendous obstacle in the way of a labour market policy designed to stimulate mobility.
