ABSTRACT

The structure of the economy will have to undergo incessant change. Capital costs, and fixed costs generally, are becoming more and more significant. The economic life of machinery and buildings has in many cases been reduced. For other factors of production besides capital time enters as a significant factor in the discussion of adaptability as well. In a modern economy there are considerable obstacles to the free movement of the factors of production. The lack of knowledge and insight into actual conditions which is always present in practice constitutes another inertia factor. The structure of the apparatus of production itself can also contribute to strengthening inertia in the economic system. As integration within the economy proceeds through the trend towards large enterprises which dominate the market and through the formation of organizations in the economy, the prospect of profit comes to be a two-edged weapon.
