ABSTRACT

This chapter examines additional artifacts to understand the institutional behaviors and actions both before and after the Nassar case caught public attention. One of USAG and MSU’s institutional failures, in the Nassar case and beyond, was investigating and reporting allegations of abuse to law enforcement or child protective services. This chapter examines several documents that indicate that, at an institutional level, USAG and MSU both had well-established patterns of not protecting—and silencing—their athletes. These artifacts include the original IndyStar investigative report, Congressional investigations, Michigan state-level inquiry into MSU, and the U.S. Olympic Committee’s own independent investigation.
