ABSTRACT
This chapter takes the reader through the traditional four skills of speaking, writing, listening, and reading, considering different approaches to each one and what teaching them involves (e.g., fluency versus accuracy, intensive versus extensive reading, composition skills, integrated skills). The chapter also introduces a ‘fifth skill’: interactional competence, distinguishing it from traditional models of ‘speaking’, based on the authors’ own research.
