ABSTRACT

This chapter takes the reader through syllabus design, materials, and methodology and how these relate to one another. Traditional grammatical syllabuses and the ELT canon are discussed before moving to the place of vocabulary in the syllabus, lexical syllabuses, and task-based syllabuses. The question of authenticity in teaching materials is addressed, and the evaluation of materials is discussed. Methodologies are outlined, from traditional grammar-translation and communicative approaches to task-based and post-method approaches.
