ABSTRACT
This chapter investigates the wide-ranging views within and among religious traditions with regard to poverty and wealth distribution. Some religions feature voluntary asceticism; and many religious traditions offer followers insights into the proper use of wealth. The case study concerns efforts by the Indian government to eliminate poverty that is strongly correlated with lower caste status.
