ABSTRACT

A neurodiverse couple therapist’s goals regarding assessment are largely the same as any systems-minded counselor. Comprehensive assessment relies on a combination of clinical tools and professional discernment to accurately conceptualize clients’ presenting concerns and create an appropriate treatment plan. Additionally, though, a Brain-Informed assessment should seek to be collaborative, holistic, ongoing, and inclusive of the specialized topics explored in the previous chapter. Of course, a neurodiverse couple therapist should always assess each partner’s strengths, safety, anxiety, depression, motivation, contempt, and more. This chapter provides specific assessment tools that neurodiverse couple therapists can incorporate within a private practice setting. It also discusses commonly observed neurodiverse couple presentations.
