ABSTRACT

Humanity embodies an immense diversity of neurological features that can be separated according to neurotype. This chapter defines and explores the term neurotype for private practice clinicians, comparing and contrasting this with personality, disorder, temperament, and identity. Neurotype Summary pages are included for: Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Giftedness, and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD). This up-to-date information is intended to provide neurodiverse couple therapists a firm foundation for understanding as well as a practical reference tool to use when providing psychoeducation to clients. Categories for each Neurotype Summary include: History, strength-based description, DSM-V-TR considerations, areas of the brain involved, prevalence, options for diagnosis, and options for support. Medication options and details of any specific treatment modality are beyond the scope of this chapter.
