ABSTRACT

Neurodiverse couples frequently bring dilemmas to the therapy room that neurotypical couples do not experience. This chapter promotes empathetic, practical ways to respond when presented with common scenarios that may occur more frequently when serving neurodiverse couples in a private practice setting. It explores the consequences of masking/unmasking, trauma related to past diagnostic and/or treatment experiences, parenting stress, identity multidimensionality, issues related to systemic inequality, and more. This chapter’s discussions may empower therapists to initiate meaningful interventions.
