ABSTRACT

Social movements and politics are two closely related yet distinctive areas heavily affected by social media. Chapter 10 illustrates seven ways in which social media functions in specific movements. In so doing, the chapter also provides a brief review of criticisms about the notion of connective-action. Issues such as slacktivism, social media ownership, and “cancel culture” are discussed. On politics, this chapter focuses on social media for political campaigns. Central to the discussion is the effectiveness of social media political campaigns regarding voter turnout and decisions. The chapter also touches on issues such as social media bots, political polarization, and regulations about the access of social media data for political campaigning.
