ABSTRACT

One of the most crucial reasons social media has become so integrated in our daily lives is that it allows us to manifest ourselves in various ways. Chapter 5 examines how social media facilitates users’ self-expression relative to face-to-face communication. In so doing, it makes a conceptual distinction between two self-expressions online: self-disclosure and self-presentation. Moreover, the chapter explores reasons for users to express themselves differently across social media channels. Along the way, topics such as identity, selfies, and social media grieving are surveyed.
