ABSTRACT

Harmonic counterpoint refers to manipulating the placement and duration of intersecting notes within chord structures. Proficiency in locating chord tones and tracking movement from one chord to the next is a key skill for burgeoning jazz pianists. This chapter provides foundational piano chord progression information and underscores the significance of this knowledge and practice in creating inner voice movement. Key musical concepts such as common chord progressions, jazz cadence, tonic, sub-dominant, and dominant chords, and chord tone voicing options are discussed. Practice exercises, hand position options, and kinesthetic application of new learning to song introductions, vamps, and song endings are also provided.
