ABSTRACT

The Catholic church had preached the transubstantiation version of holy communion. The priest transforms the bread and the wine, which miraculously becomes the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Luther agreed that the bread and the wine actually became the body and blood of Christ during the sacrament, but this was not brought about by a priest. Luther agreed that the bread and the wine actually became the body and blood of Christ during the sacrament, but this was not brought about by a priest. The first group of German Lutherans were already reaping the rewards of their decision to migrate in defence of their religion when Pastor Fritzsche and his flock arrived on 28 October 1841. The economic success of the first Lutherans no doubt helped to maintain a consistent emigration rate from German-speaking countries.
