ABSTRACT

Trust is a key feature of the Pathways to Partnership model. Trust is not a single entity, but rather is made up of multiple components, each of which work together to develop a level of confidence in the family–school partnership. In a Pathway 1 school, trust is a well-understood foundation of a family–school partnership; in a Pathway 2 school, there is a lack of understanding around what trust is, and the components that must be present in order to enact and be given, genuine trust. There are two types of trust that apply to the family–school partnership: Relational and institutional trust. In a Pathway 1 school, levels of trust are high, resulting in a culture that embraces the contribution of family members. In a Pathway 2 school levels of trust are low, which often creates a culture of fear and hostility which can then sabotage change initiatives.
