ABSTRACT

This chapter first explicates in what ways “covert progression” is distinct from various kinds of previously investigated deeper-level meaning, including “covert plot,” “second story,” “submerged plot,” “submerged narrative,” and Rohrberger’s “short story.” It also discusses how dual narrative dynamics is dissimilar from Dunbar’s “double discourse.” With this clarification paving the way, this chapter proceeds to an investigation of the different relations between plot development and covert progression. The ways the two kinds of dynamics interact with each other are diversified, but two broad categories can be distinguished: one of “complementation” and the other of “subversion,” each containing a number of subcategories.
