ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider the concepts of well-being, identity and belonging, three themes included in many curriculum frameworks, including the Aistear framework. In bringing together these three themes we foreground their interconnectivity and influence on children, particularly on the socio-emotional aspects of development. Within the chapter we look in detail at each of the individual themes and their particular contribution to children’s learning and development. We review the various different practice approaches that can support and enhance children’s well-being, including the role of nature and a calm learning environment, strengthen children’s sense of belonging in inclusive early childhood settings and secure connectivity with the home learning environment and, in this multilingual, multicultural society how we can respectfully make visible children’s individual and cultural identity.
