ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 provides the reader with understandings about social and emotional learning during the early childhood years. Details about learning experiences for advanced young children are discussed, along with considerations for organizing the culture and climate in the environment where the child is spending their time, at home and in educational settings. Adults need to carefully consider the environment and how it may be influencing the psychosocial development of a young child who is absorbing many details from the world around them and creating social and emotional understandings at an early age. Competencies about social and emotional knowledge are presented, along with specific learning strategies and techniques that may be used by parents and educators to help young children develop their social and emotional awareness and skills.
