ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 includes developmental characteristics about school-age children who are six- to eight-year-olds. Affective characteristics from the research in the field of gifted education are presented as well as an introduction and brief explanation of giftedness and school-based programming. Depending on the school setting, identification for gifted programs may occur in some schools as young as kindergarten. Three case studies present various manifestations of social and emotional characteristics at this age. The discussion of each case study provides a range of activities and strategies to help develop social and emotional skills. A set of discussion questions allows the reader to apply the information to other children and develop strategies to use in both home and school environments.
