ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces one of the central messages of the book; knowing ourselves better leads to better career choices. The chapter opens by looking at our value systems and how understanding what is important to us is the key when ensuring this carries through to our career and all the decisions we make concerning our working lives. For example, our values around money, family, work, health, community, and society will all influence the type of work and working setup best suited to us – and by identifying what this is, we are maximising our chances of success and progress.

Alongside values, this chapter also invites us to reflect on our strengths, what makes us truly unique, our transferable skills, and our working style so that we can reconcile where we are with where we might want to go and how to reposition our skills and experiences to date to make change happen and start carving out what we really want out of our working lives.
