ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the concept of the sound image is introduced and explored in the context of offscreen sound, or sound without an obvious onscreen cause. These sound images are explored with some useful examples from scholarly research and writing in this area, with particular attention to how these sounds have been used in cinema. It is posited that in games, we are just as likely, if not more likely, to use these techniques, and to continue to develop and innovate their use in terms of gameplay.
