ABSTRACT

The dissemination of ideas, techniques, and knowledge about video-game audio is one that has always been fairly open and free in terms of communication, writing, and presentation in the field. However, understanding how important this information is to the wider industry is something that is sometimes overlooked. Entire fields of game audio, such as mixing, would not exist without public-facing talks, demos, and inspirational material that is shown as part of these communications (if developer EA DICE had never disclosed how it mixed its battlefield games, nobody would know about the HDR technique beyond those studio walls). This chapter explores the various aspects of how this information is shared, firstly close to home within the game team itself, then by wider and wider concentric circles outside of the studio, the publisher, and beyond.
