ABSTRACT

Import and model the dunes at White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. The White Sands dune field is composed primarily of crescent-shaped barchan and parabolic dunes. The dunes are shaped by Aeolian processes – the brilliant white gypsum sand is eroded, transported, and deposited by predominately northeasterly winds. This arid, windswept landscape is dynamic. The crest lines of the barchan dunes evolve – decomposing and reforming – on a decadal timescale, while the parabolic dunes on the periphery can migrate up to 2.4 meters every year [2].
