ABSTRACT

A theoretical account of bullshit helps place No Bullshit Therapy (NBT) in a social context and helps the reader to make a link between the ubiquitousness of spin, fake news, and bullshit and the loss of faith in our political leaders and other community representatives such as therapists. Definitions of bullshit are discussed and for the purposes of this book, the emphasis is placed on the concealment of motive in therapeutic encounters. Once bullshit is defined, the reader is invited to reflect on their own internal bullshit meter and how they respond to detecting hints of duplicity and manipulation and then to use these reflections to appreciate the experience of clients who are suspicious of therapeutic services.
